Work has started on the North West Crewe Package (NWCP) scheme from the May 9th 2022 lasting for approximately 80 weeks and will see a series of highways and junction improvements made around the Leighton area to ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital.

The package also includes the extension of the walking and cycling route to Leighton Hospital and the north-west of Crewe.

The overall scheme requires the closure of the major arterial A530 Middlewich Road, between its junction with Pyms Lane and Smithy Lane and will also include various other closures along the A530 Middlewich Road until approximately March 2023 with the overall NWCP scheme expected to take around two years to complete.

Details of these further road closures in the area will be announced as the scheme progresses.

Regular project newsletters are to be issued for local residents who are encouraged to sign up for by visiting the council’s website at: cheshireeast.gov.uk

The NWCP works are being carried out on behalf of Cheshire East Council by contractor Balfour Beatty who will be based off the A530 Middlewich Road – in the area of the current road closure.

Further information of closures and diversion routes can be found here: North West Crewe Package (cheshireeast.gov.uk).

Access will be maintained for local residents & emergency services at all times.

The Scheme

The North West Crewe Package (NWCP) will improve roads and junctions around the Leighton area in North West Crewe.
This will ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital, bring open access for proposed housing developments and for local businesses to expand.

The NWCP will include:

  • The construction of a new 2.6km single carriageway road
  • 7 new roundabouts
  • Realignment of Smithy Lane
  • Flowers Lane junction improvements on A530 Middlewich Road and Minshull New Road
  • Extension of the Connect 2 walking and cycling route to Leighton Hospital and North West Crewe.

A section of Minshull New Road outside Leighton Academy will be closed to traffic creating a safer environment for children arriving and departing the school.
